Südalinna Teater

Südalinna Teater presents an ambitious contemporary adaptation of Don Quixote, directed by Daniil Zandberg, which revisits with irony, humor, and philosophical depth the tension between dreams and reality. In this production, Aleksandr Ivaškevitš portrays a profoundly human Don Quixote — comic, moving, and driven by an unshakeable faith in goodness and in the possibility of transforming the world. The staging — performed in Russian with simultaneous Estonian translation — blends modern visual elements with the Cervantine literary essence throughout its 2 hours and 50 minutes (including an intermission), offering an intense yet accessible experience for both lovers of the classics and newcomers alike.

Life Is a Dream, a masterpiece of Spain’s Golden Age, stands as one of the most influential works of the European Baroque. Performed across centuries and cultures, Calderón de la Barca’s play explores the fate of Prince Segismundo, imprisoned since birth after a prophecy convinces his father, King Basilio of Poland, that the boy is destined to become a tyrant and murderer. Tormented by doubt, the king later brings Segismundo to court—under the illusion of a dream—to test whether destiny can be overcome. Far more than a political drama, Life Is a Dream delves into universal questions of free will, responsibility, and the nature of reality. This blend of intellectual depth and poetic intensity is what makes the play timeless, resonating powerfully with contemporary audiences. The production will be performed in Estonian on 8 May, 11 May, 12 May, 14 May, 15 May, 16 May, 30 May, and 1 June.
